West Ham United boss Julen Lopetegui is on the verge of being sacked after a disastrous start to the 2024/25 season.
The Irons finished in the top half of the Premier League table last season, but after investing millions on new players, wanted to at least qualify for Europe and decided to part ways with David Moyes. They appointed Julen Lopetegui as Moyes’ replacement and backed him fully in the summer transfer window.
The East Londoners undoubtedly enjoyed their most productive transfer window ever as they brought in as many as new players. They signed the likes of Crysencio Summerville, Nicklas Fullkrug, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Jean-Clair Todibo and others to show their ambition.
However, Julen Lopetegui has failed to get the best out of the squad and give a playing identity to the team thus far. The Spaniard’s side have suffered two heavy defeats in the last three games, with the latest coming at the hands of Nottingham Forest, who won 3-0 at City Ground on the weekend. The defeat to Forest has left the Hammers 14th in the table, as pressure continues to mount on Lopetegui.
Should West Ham fail to beat Everton in their next Premier League fixture before the international break, Lopetegui will reportedly be sacked.
Edin Terzic, Graham Potter will be considered by West Ham
The Everton fixture is extremely huge for Lopetegui and he will have to win it in order to cling onto his job at the London Stadium. While the speculation over his future continues, the West Ham chiefs are currently succession planning in case they decide to pull the plug on the Spanish tactician.
Edin Terzic appears to be the frontrunner if the Hammers decide to change their manager. The German-Croatian coach is currently unemployed having left Borussia Dortmund at the end of last season. He has previously spent time with the east London club, having been an assistant coach of Slaven Bilic between 2015 and 2017 before later going on to manage Dortmund.
Terzic is a young manager who favours a possession-based, attacking and expansive brand of football, and his time at Signal Iduna Park has demonstrated that he has the personality and qualities to manage a club like West Ham.
Graham Potter—former Brighton and Chelsea manager—will also be considered by the Irons. The Englishman has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea as he continues evaluating his options before taking a new role in management. For now, all eyes will be on West Ham’s next game against Everton and whether Lopetegui manages to get a response from his team or not.
