Tottenham Hotspur are showing an interest in signing Club Brugge left-back Maxim De Cuyper.
Maxim De Cuyper, 24, has seen his reputation enhance since last year, thanks to his consistently impressive performances for Club Brugge. Having made his senior debut back in 2019/20 season, the left-back has gone onto rack up 84 appearances, registering six goals and 19 assists.
The Belgian had a terrific 2023/24 campaign, playing a key role in Club Brugge’s winning the league title. He contributed 20 goals in 55 appearances across all competitions. Maxim De Cuyper was going very well this season before suffering an Achilles tendon problem last week, ruling him out for the foreseeable future.
Tottenham had reportedly sent scouts to watch De Cuyper in action recently, although they weren’t the only club. London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea have also been keeping tabs on the 24-year-old’s progress at Club Brugge.
Maxim De Cuyper on Tottenham radar ahead of winter window
Tottenham have endured an underwhelming campaign, with a glut of injuries hampering their progress under Ange Postecoglou. The Australian’s defensive unit have been plagued by injury problems.
Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Ben Davies are currently sidelined, forcing Postecoglou to use teenage midfielder Archie Gray in central defence alongside Radu Dragusin. To make matters worse, Djed Spence was sent off in Spurs’ 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day while Dragusin went off injured.
The Lilywhites certainly require defensive reinforcements in the January transfer window. A centre-back is an absolute must to help out Postecoglou’s side immediately. In addition, they could also do with a new left-back to cover and compete with Destiny Udogie, and Maxim De Cuyper would be a brilliant option.
De Cuyper has proven himself in the Belgian Pro League, and at 24, perhaps is at the right time to make the step up in his career. A move to Spurs could be perfect as it would allow him to test himself against the world’s best players in the Premier League and improve his game further. The six-cap Belgium international has the attacking qualities to thrive in Big Ange’s system at N17 whilst challenging Udogie for a regular spot in the team.
However, with several clubs vying for his signature, Tottenham must firm up their interest in De Cuyper and table a bid next month.
