The 2024 summer transfer window witnessed Premier League clubs spending big on new signings. With the market officially closed for the majority of European leagues including in England, teams will now have to sustain until January with their current squads and hope their new signings make the desire impact on the pitch.
For some clubs, they will hope that their new signings will help them maintain top-flight status. Others will look to break into the top half of the table, top six or perhaps even win the coveted Premier League title. It is too early to judge whether every signing will be a success or failure, but it is easier to name the most expensive deals in the Premier League this summer.
Without further ado, let us take a look at the five most expensive Premier League deals of the recently concluded summer transfer window.
The most expensive Premier League summer transfers of 2024
-
Joao Felix (From Atletico Madrid to Chelsea)— £46.3m
Portugal international Joao Felix returned to Chelsea this summer on a permanent deal worth up to £46.3m from Atletico Madrid after spending half a season on loan in 2023.
Once regarded as one of the mercurial talents in Europe, Felix scored four times in 20 appearances for Chelsea in his previous spell. He came off the bench and scored in the Blues’ thumping 6-2 win over Wolves away last weekend.
The Portuguese’s arrival at Stamford Bridge worked perfectly with the exit of Conor Gallagher, who went the opposite way to Atletico Madrid. The 24-year-old, who spent the last season on loan at Barcelona, will be hoping to unlock his true potential under Enzo Maresca in the Premier League.
-
Amadou Onana (From Everton to Aston Villa)— £50m
There were many suitors for Belgium international Amadou Onana, but Aston Villa won the race for his signature. He is now Aston Villa’s most expensive buy ever, completing a £50million move from Everton after his commitments at Euro 2024.
Onana has seamlessly replaced Douglas Luiz in Unai Emery’s midfield and made a positive impression for his new club already. The 23-year-old powerhouse has already scored twice for Villa in wins over West Ham United and Leicester City respectively.
-
Pedro Neto (Wolverhampton Wanderers to Chelsea)— £54m
Pedro Neto had done more than enough at Wolves to prove he is clearly cut to play for a big Premier League side. Chelsea decided to splash £54m to get the Portuguese winger’s signature, fortifying an already jam-packed attacking force.
The 24-year-old has already made three appearances for the Blues and interestingly supplied an assist in the 6-2 hammering of his former club at Molineux last weekend. If he manages to stay away from injuries that has hampered his career in the last couple of years, Neto would be an asset for Maresca’s Chelsea.
-
Leny Yoro (Lille to Manchester United)— £52m
Last season’s defensive woes were a tough watch for Manchester United fans, conceding more goals in the Premier League than they ever had achieved before. The new INEOS ownership hit the ground running earlier this summer, targeting profile of young, hungry talents with high potential.
Under the new regime at Old Trafford, in came Leny Yoro in a £52m deal from Lille. Regarded as one of the best young defensive prospects in the continent, Yoro’s signature appeared to be a straight shootout between Real Madrid and Manchester United and the latter won the rattle.
The young Frenchman was expected to play a big part in the Red Devils’ defence, but unfortunately, he suffered a foot injury in pre-season that has sidelined him for up to three months.
-
Dominic Solanke (From Bournemouth to Tottenham)— £65m
Thanks to his 19-goal Premier League season last time out for Bournemouth, Dominic Solanke had entered the market as a coveted commodity. After being linked with top Premier League clubs, it was Tottenham who broke their transfer record to sign Solanke in a £65m deal from Bournemouth.
Spurs decided not to replace their talisman Harry Kane last summer and in the 2024 January transfer window, with head coach Ange Postecoglou using Son Heung-min and Richarlison up front. They have finally tried to fill the Kane-shaped void in the squad by landing Solanke.
The English striker has sealed a move to Spurs after his goalscoring exploits for the Cherries last season, giving him a chance to showcase his skills for a top Premier League club after failing to cut the mustard previously at Liverpool.
