Ronaldo transfer thrown into doubt after Al-Nassr issue defiant statement

AL-NASSR are confident they can keep Cristiano Ronaldo – just days after the Portuguese star indicated he would leave the club.

The 40-year-old declared earlier this week his “chapter is over” in Saudi Arabia.

Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr as a free agent after leaving Manchester United in 2023.

He has since failed to win a major trophy at the club despite being the Saudi Pro League’s top scorer two seasons in a row.

Ronaldo appeared to announce his exit on Monday ahead of his contract expiring on June 30.

In a cryptic social media post, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner wrote: “This chapter is over. The story? Still being written. Grateful to all.”.

Speculation had already begun on Ronaldo’s next destination with the Portuguese legend seemingly in no mood to retire.

But Al-Nassr sporting director Fernando Hierro believes he can change Ronaldo’s mind and get him to pen a new deal.

Hierro told a press conference on Thursday: “I have to be positive. I don’t think Ronaldo will leave Al-Nassr.

“In any case, we are working hard on all aspects.

“Ronaldo’s contract with Al-Nassr runs until the end of June 30.

“We will work to renew his contract so he can continue with us, and there are many clubs interested in signing him.

“He is a huge phenomenon in the history of football and has helped the league grow.

“We are in contact to renew his contract and hope he continues with us.”

Fifa president Gianni Infantino hinted last week that Ronaldo is in talks over a move to a team involved in the upcoming Club World Cup.

Infantino told streamer iShowSpeed: “Ronaldo might play for one of the teams as well at the Club World Cup.

The revamped tournament begins on June 14 in the United States.

Reports from Brazil suggest Botafogo are the team in question.

Sao Paulo-based insider Jorge Nicola claims the club have approached Ronaldo and offered a deal which would see him play in the CWC.

Nicola added via Football365: “Ronaldo has not yet responded but there is an enormous expectation of seeing him become a Botafogo player for the Club World Cup.”
