Manchester United are planning to bring in RB Leipzig left-back David Raum in 2025, as new head coach Ruben Amorim looks to address a key position in his squad.
The Portuguese tactician, 39, has made a strong start to life at Old Trafford, winning two and drawing one from his three matches in charge thus far, though the first litmus test his Manchester United will come against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday evening in a mouthwatering Premier League encounter.
The left wing-back role in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system has been a bit problematic, though, with both Diogo Dalot and Tyrell Malacia not showing enough that they can offer a solution over the long term. These are early days and Malacia only returned on the pitch after more than 18 months out, but Amorim may want to see progression faster. Thus, he is keen on adding a left-footed full-back to his defensive ranks.
Manchester United held concrete discussions with David Raum over a possible move last summer but it didn’t materialise. The 20-time English champions reportedly want to revive their interest in the RB Leipzig star and his developments are closely being monitored.
Raum, 26, made his name at Greuther Furth before moving to Hoffenheim in 2021 as a free agent. After a strong season with Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga, he was snapped up by RB Leipzig, and the Germany international has since been a mainstay in their backline. The left-back/wing-back, who is currently sidelined with an ankle injury, has racked up three goals and 16 assists in 89 appearances for Die Roten thus far.
David Raum would be a brilliant fit at Man United
Man United have experienced problems in the left-back position for the best part of two campaigns now. Luke Shaw and Malacia have only become healthy after spending a long time on the sidelines, disturbing the balance of the side often under previous manager Erik ten Hag.
Given Shaw has become injury prone and cannot be relied upon, while questions marks remain over whether Malacia can return back to his sublime best after missing more than 18 months of action, Amorim has decided to recruit a new player in one of his system’s most critical positions. And Raum appears to be that player.
Raum has been one of the most highly rated left-backs/wing-backs in the Bundesliga, and he has a staggering 111 goal contributions in 322 appearances to his name. At 26, he is possibly in the peak of his powers and could make an immediate impact at Man United.
The German would be a very good fit in Amorim’s system and the United boss would willingly sanction his signing if INEOS can agree on a fee with Leipzig.
