Manchester United have seemingly set their sights on signing Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo.
The Red Devils will likely look to bolster their squad this summer, as Ruben Amorim looks to make his mark. The Portuguese tactician, who swapped Sporting CP for Manchester United in November 2024, welcomed defender Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven to the club during the January transfer window.
The 20-time English champions want to further add to their defensive ranks in the summer. They have reportedly formalised offer for Ronald Araujo, with a supposed ‘£50m bid’ on the table. It is unclear if the Uruguayan international would be willing to leave Barcelona for Man United, especially given that Amorim’s side could be without Champions League football next season.
Araujo, 26, renewed his contract with Barcelona until 2031 earlier this year but that hasn’t put an end to suggestions the player and the club could go their separate ways. He has had multiple injury problems in the last couple of years, and with Barca boss Hansi Flick preferring the centre-back partnership of Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez, the 26-year-old has been limited to only six La Liga appearances this term.
Manchester United revive interest in Ronald Araujo
If Man United are to make high-profile transfers, they will have to first make sales in order to stay on the right side with financial regulations. Both Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof will exit the club as free agents upon the expiration of their respective contracts. It is unclear when Lisandro Martinez will return after suffering an ACL injury in February, while Harry Maguire’s future at Old Trafford remains uncertain.
Thus, the Red Devils will be forced to address their defensive conundrum despite splashing over €100 million on signing Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt last summer. INEOS have shown an interest in Araujo to strengthen their squad—one of the highly-rated centre-backs across Europe.
The Rivera-born star has made over 160 appearances for the Catalan giants, scoring 10 goals. Primarily a centre-back by trade, he can also operate at right-back when required and do a job for his team. Araujo’s European experience as well as combination of technical skills and physical attributes would make him a valuable addition to United’s backline. He is a leader and can slot in well in Amorim’s rearguard alongside Yoro and De Ligt.
The Uruguayan, however, remains reluctant to leave Barcelona, having signed an extension until 2031 earlier this year. So, INEOS have a task cut out to persuade Araujo to leave Camp Nou for United in the summer, and their position could be strengthened with the club’s qualification to the Champions League.
