Manchester United begun talks to sign Lecce starlet Patrick Dorgu

Manchester United are set to enter formal talks with Lecce for the signing of Patrick Dorgu, as Ruben Amorim looks to reinforce his squad during this January transfer window.

The Portuguese tactician is desperate to sign a new left wing-back. Luke Shaw continues to endure recurring injury issues, with the England international yet to make a start in any competition this season due to injuries, having been limited to just 12 Premier League starts in 2023-24. Also, the Manchester United boss hasn’t been convinced by Tyrell Malacia since the Dutchman returned from a long-term injury.

Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are full-backs by trade but being used as makeshift wing-backs. However, they lack qualities to fulfil the duties required in a wing-back, leading to Ruben Amorim searching for a specialist player in that position. And he has fixated his eyes on Patrick Dorgu, with reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano claiming Man United are set to open negotiations with Lecce for the player. The versatile Denmark international is 100% keen on the move.

“Manchester United are set to open formal talks with Lecce for Patrick Dorgu, no bid has been sent so far,” Fabrizio Romano tweeted.

“As exclusively revealed two weeks ago, he’s high on list as Kerkez and Nuno Mendes are still too expensive. Dorgu, 100% keen on move… Lecce want around €40m.”

Patrick Dorgu could be a sensational signing for Man United

Amorim is keen to bolster his squad this month amid a run of form that has seen his new side slip to just 10 points above the Premier League’s relegation zone. The Red Devils were beaten 3-1 by Brighton at Old Trafford on Sunday, with Amorim labelling his squad as the worst squad in the club’s glorious history.

The Portuguese coach wants players suiting his preferred 3-4-2-1 system, with Dorgu, who has featured on both flanks as a wing-back and in advanced areas for Lecce this season, viewed as one of that profile. The 20-year-old has made 20 appearances for the Serie A side this term, scoring three goals and bagging an assist. He is strong, athletic and pacey, and boasts of a great engine.

Capped four times by Denmark, Dorgu is a player of huge potential and could make a big impact instantly for Amorim’s side if signed. With the youngster keen on a move to Old Trafford, Man United must quickly try to agree a fee with Lecce and get his signature.
