Manchester City midfielder Rodri is set to miss the remainder of the season after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

In a press conference ahead of City’s upcoming match against Newcastle, manager Pep Guardiola confirmed that the Spanish midfielder underwent surgery on Friday to address the severe knee injury.

Rodri sustained the injury during the Premier League clash against Arsenal, just 20 minutes into the match. The incident occurred as he awkwardly landed on his right knee while contesting a corner with Arsenal’s Thomas Partey. Rodri’s immediate reaction suggested a serious issue, but the extent of the injury remained uncertain for much of the week due to conflicting medical evaluations.

Initially, there was hope that the injury would be less severe. However, after further assessments, it was confirmed that Rodri would require surgery on his ACL, ruling him out for the next nine months. This means the key midfielder will be sidelined until the 2025/26 season.

“Next season he will be here. This season is over,” said Guardiola. “It is what it is at that level. We are here to support him. Good recovery, step by step and we move forward.”

Manchester City’s Plan Without Rodri

Guardiola acknowledged that Rodri’s absence will be a significant challenge, but expressed confidence in his squad’s ability to adapt.

What he gives us we don’t have a similar player but all the players together can replace what Rodri has or has given us since arriving to us. We have to find a way to play a lot of months without an important player for us – everybody knows it. “We want a speedy recovery for next season.”

Rodri’s injury leaves a substantial gap in Manchester City’s midfield, and fans will be eager to see how Guardiola reshapes his team to cope with this setback for the remainder of the campaign.
