Lamine Yamal sets hopeful Ballon d'Or target

Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal has his sights set on the Ballon d’Or and hopes to win the coveted trophy after being named the best young player in the world during Monday evening’s ceremony.

The Spanish winger picked up the Kopa Trophy on the same night that Manchester City’s Rodri claimed the individual men’s prize, signifying his status as the best male player in the world under the age of 21.

Yamal’s breakthrough campaign at Barca established him as a first-team regular under Xavi, and already the 17-year-old has netted six goals in 14 appearances under new manager Hansi Flick.

The teenager’s success for club and country has catapulted him to the top of world football, earning his spot among the best. But the youngster has his eyes on another prize, revealing his dream to win the Ballon d’Or.

“It’s incredible to be at this gala and to go for more,” Yamal said via Movistar Plus. “To go for more means La Liga title, the Champions League, the Copa del Rey and everything we can.

“Individually, in the end all the players have that goal [the Ballon d’Or]. Hopefully I can win it as soon as possible, it’s something I have in mind and I’m going for it.”

Rodri became the first defensive midfielder to claim the Ballon d’Or after beating Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior to the award on Monday evening. The event came with it’s controversy, with the Spanish champions deciding to boycott the awards after learning that the Brazilian would not be taking home the trophy.

Yamal could be in line to win next year’s prize if Barca can continue their fine La Liga form.
