Newcastle United have not enjoyed a strong season in the Premier League. They presently lie in the bottom half of the table, although only five points separates them from fourth-place Nottingham Forest.
The Magpies have some work to do in the forthcoming January transfer window. They must bolster their squad in the coming weeks to boost Eddie Howe’s chances of taking the club back in Europe. Their transfer priorities heading into January are more or less clear, with a central defender and wide forward wanted.
However, there is a player in another position who would happily sign for the Toon Army. Indeed, as per journalist Josh Hughes speaking on The Spurs Chat Podcast, Newcastle United would be overwhelming favourites to sign Ipswich Town left-back Leif Davis if they decide to make a move for him in January.
“Onto players that I like and I think we should be targeting. Leif Davis at Ipswich, one goal and two assists this season, he has a wicked left foot, he would fit the bill,” Josh Hughes said on The Spurs Chat Podcast.
“However, he’s Newcastle mad. He’s from Newcastle, he’s a Newcastle fan, if Newcastle have a sniff there’s only one place he will be going, but I like him.”
Newcastle could move a move for Leif Davis
A product of the Morecambe academy, Leif Davis joined Leeds United in July 2018. After being promoted to the first team, he could only manage 14 appearances in total before being sold to Ipswich Town in 2022.
The left-back has since been a star in Ipswich Town’s double promotion from the League One to the Premier League under Kieran McKenna. He has already racked up over 100 appearances for the Tractor Boys, netting six goals and supplying 37 assists. The 24-year-old has adapted well to the demands of Premier League football, playing every single minute so far this season.
A die-hard Newcastle fan, Davis—as Hughes—claims—would be enticed by the opportunity to join them should the Magpies come calling for his signature. As Dan Burn has been operating as a centre-back since the start of the season owing to Sven Botman’s long-term injury, Lewis Hall has had to cover all the games from the left-back spot.
There is a clear lack of depth at left-back beyond Hall, thus, perhaps Newcastle should take some advice from Hughes and look to bring in Davis. In Davies, Howe would get an enterprising, attacking and aggressive left-back with a sweet left foot. Due to his qualities, he’d be a great fit in Howe’s system at Newcastle.
