He collapsed on his way into the Etihad from entrance K and was pronounced dead shortly after he was raced to hospital.

Gary told the MEN: “He had the most wicked sense of humour and was one of the most intelligent blokes I’ve ever met.

“He was so quick, knowledgeable on anything. He always made you have a laugh and a good time.

“He was a good friend to everybody and a lifelong friend. He’d do anything for anyone.”

Gary last saw Les when he headed to his seat while Les stayed with some of their friends.

The last words Les said to his friend of 30 years Gary were: “I’ll see you in a bit.”

When Gary went to join Les, he could not find him in his seat – so he texted and called him.

Gary then got a call from the hospital saying Les was in a “serious” state before a steward told him Les had passed away.

Les was born in Wythenshawe before moving to Blackpool and had served as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers.

The MCFC Military Veterans Supporters group read: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Les Budge Sparrow.

“Les was a former Sapper who was immensely proud of his service with the Royal Engineers.

“Les left us just before yesterday’s game at Man City. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

“Rest in peace, Les. Thank you for your service.”

Yesterday City said: “We are aware of the tragic news that one of our supporters passed away following a medical incident at Sunday’s match.

“The thoughts of everyone at the Club are with their family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
