Everton make enquiry for Sporting CP winger Marcus Edwards

Everton are exploring the possibility of signing Sporting CP winger Marcus Edwards in this winter transfer window.

Marcus Edwards has fallen down the pecking order at Sporting CP this season, playing only 346 minutes across all competitions. His stock has plummeted in the last 15-18 months after a superb start to life in Portugal as he produced consistently strong performances in his first few seasons with Sporting. However, the fleet-footed winger has been in and out of the side as he doesn’t share a great relationship with new head coach Rui Borges, prompting the Lions to listen to offers for him.

Everton have reportedly enquired about the conditions of signing Edwards before the winter window slams shut. Sporting are ready to selling him for €12 million, with 35% of the value going to his former club Tottenham due to a sell-on clause the North London club inserted in his contract.

New Everton boss David Moyes keen on Marcus Edwards

Everton new owners—the Friedkin Group—relieved Sean Dyche of his duties earlier this month after a disappointing two-year tenure at Goodison Park. They have appointed David Moyes as Dyche’s successor, with the Scot returning to his old stomping ground where he previously managed for 11 years.

Last Sunday, Moyes bagged his first victory as returning Everton boss, beating Tottenham 3-2 at Goodison Park. The veteran tactician is keen on reinforcements to help the club maintain its top-flight status, and he seemingly has set his sights on Marcus Edwards to improve his team’s attacking unit.

Edwards has a decent record of 24 goals and 26 assists in 120 matches for Sporting. The Portuguese attacker is a silky dribbler, unpredictable, quick and likes to make the most use of his diminutive frame to evade challenges from his opponents. He can play in different attacking areas of the pitch and possesses the qualities to improve the Everton side going forward.

At 26, the ex-Tottenham man is perhaps at the right age to embrace a new challenge, and while the Toffees are fighting for their lives in the Premier League, Edwards could be tempted to join them and play a big role in keeping the club safe. He’d also be a good option to bring off the bench against tiring defences, with his speed and directness making him an ideal fit in Moyes’ counter-attacking system.

That being said, Everton must not hesitate much and pay €12 million to Sporting for Edwards’ signature.
