Once regarded as one of the finest young talents in Spanish football, Ansu Fati—a La Masia graduate—was once expected to replace Lionel Messi at Barcelona and was even handed the 2022 World Cup winner’s iconic number 10 shirt at the club. However, the player has not been able to live up to the lofty expectations of the fans and pundits alike, especially due to injury problems.

The Spanish international is not in manager Hansi Flick’s plans at Camp Nou and was left out of the Barcelona squad for the fourth successive game on Saturday amid speculation surrounding his future. Tottenham reportedly have shown an interest in Fati, who needs to leave Barcelona to play regularly and get back his career on track.

Tottenham’s lack of January activity despite horrendous form

Tottenham have endured a forgettable season and suffered their 12th Premier League defeat on Sunday—a 3-2 away loss to Everton. They have only won once in last seven Premier League games, and the latest defeat at Goodison Park has put Ange Postecoglou under serious pressure.

Despite the squad stretched due to injuries and the team performing way below their standards, the Hotspur Way chiefs have made just one signing in this transfer window. Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky has been brought in from Slavia Prague as cover for the injured No.1 Guglielmo Vicario, who is not expected back from an ankle problem until late February.

There is a clear need for Daniel Levy to accelerate the club’s transfer business and back Ange Postecoglou in these desperate times.

Spurs given chance to sign Ansu Fati

Spurs suffered a blow on Saturday when Dominic Solanke tweaked his knee while shooting on the training pitch and missed the 3-2 defeat to Everton as a result. The extent of Solanke’s injury is unknown, while Brennan Johnson also was absent from Sunday’s game after picking up a knock.

The North Londoners cannot catch a break from injuries, with their defence and forward areas hit significantly. As far as their attacking targets are concerned, the Lilywhites are understood to be eyeing a move for Ansu Fati.

The youngster spent last season on loan at Brighton where he showed some flashes of quality and potential amid plenty of injury concerns. If he can stay fit, Fati would be a shrewd acquisition for Postecoglou’s side. A wide left forward by trade, the Spaniard can operate through the middle as a No.10 and No.9, and such versatility should help the Spurs side beset by injuries to forwards like Solanke, Johnson, Timo Werner and Wilson Odobert.

That being said, it will interesting to see whether or not Tottenham can agree on a deal with Barcelona for Fati.
