West Ham icon urges West Ham to sign Rashford
Tony Cottee reckons Marcus Rashford would be a great fit at West Ham – provided there was compromise over his wages and reassurance on his fitness.
Disgruntled Rashford, 27, wants out of Manchester United but few clubs in the world can afford his £300,000-a-week wages.
West Ham have struggled for goals this season and would need someone to boost their firepower but the figures involved might be too much.
Cottee, 59, scored 146 goals in 336 appearances in two spells at the club, and he said: “It depends what Marcus Rashford you’re getting.
“If you’re getting the one from a couple of years ago, he scored 30 goals. I have always been a big fan of Marcus Rashford. He’s a fabulous player.
“But there’s been a lot of things going on in his personal life recently, particularly last year, that I would be concerned about. If you’re swapping the bright lights of Manchester for the bright lights of London, it worked for Jesse Lingard.
“Another issue with Rashford – West Ham can’t afford £300,000-a-week wages. I don’t think too many clubs can.
“But you can always do a deal where West Ham pay, I don’t know, £120,000-a-week. Man Utd have got to pay him anyway.
“Would I like him at the moment? Yes. But the problem you’ve got is he’s probably not fit because he hasn’t played games.
“Personally, I’d like to see Marcus at the club. As long as he’s got some fitness, I think he could be a good addition to the club.
“You’d have to play him as a centre forward. There’s no point in buying him to play wide, right or left. They’ve got the wide players.”
