Tottenham Hotspur have expressed an interest in signing Brentford striker Yoane Wissa, as Ange Postecoglou plans to bolster his attacking unit.
The Australian tactician is under severe pressure at the club following a run of just one win in 11 Premier League games. Speculation surrounding his future intensified on Sunday when Spurs were beaten 2-1 by relegation-threatened Leicester City, which left the North London outfit 15th in the table—eight points above the drop zone.
Ange Postecoglou is desperate for reinforcements, especially up front following injuries to Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson. Now, Spurs have reportedly opened talks with Brentford over the signing of Yoane Wissa. The Lilywhites have also contacted the player’s representatives to express their interest.
Wissa, 28, has been one of the most underrated strikers in the Premier League in recent years. Recruited from French side FC Lorient back in 2021, the DR Congo international has scored 41 goals in 134 appearances for Brentford. He has also supplied nine assists, showing the creative side of his game.
Tottenham eye late move for Yoane Wissa
Tottenham’s attacking unit has been stretched in recent weeks. After Timo Werner’s injury, Solanke and Johnson have also joined the German on the sidelines. Solanke suffered a knee injury in training before the Everton game and has now been ruled out up to mid-March.
This leaves Ange Postecoglou with just Son Heung-min and Richarlison as the only senior options up front. Youngster Will Lankshear can also contribute if required but he is expected to go out on loan for regular minutes. Thus, the signing of a centre-forward is critical before the end of the window and Spurs are looking to bring in Wissa.
Wissa has been vital for Brentford since arriving at the club in 2021. He has shone this term in the wake of Ivan Toney’s departure to Saudi Arabia. The DR Congolese has already netted 11 goals in 20 Premier League, flourishing alongside Bryan Mbeumo in a two-pronged Bees’ attack.
At 28, the African is operating at the peak of his powers, and with his experience, versatility and goalscoring ability, he could make an immediate impact at Spurs. Big Ange’s side need a lift in spirits, especially after their poor run of form and injury crisis, and Wissa has the qualities to provide that.
As Tottenham are competing in the Europa League, Wissa may be tempted to make a switch to North London if an official offer gets tabled.
