Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are in the transfer race for the signing of Feyenoord midfielder Quinten Timber.
Quinten Timber, 23, younger brother of Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber, is expected to leave Feyenoord either in January or at the end of the season, alerting several clubs across Europe. A product of the famed Ajax academy, the Netherlands international left the club in 2021 and joined FC Utrecht.
After an impressive season with FC Utrecht, Feyenoord snapped him up in July 2022 for a then club-record fee of €8.5 million. Since arriving at Feyenoord, Timber has been a consistent performer in the middle of the park, influencing things at both ends of the pitch. Back in September, the 23-year-old was appointed the club’s new captain as well.
Liverpool are reportedly looking to beat Tottenham for Timber’s services in 2025, as the midfield dynamo looks to leave Feyenoord to take the next step in his career.
Liverpool, Spurs eye move for Quinten Timber
Liverpool were seeking midfield reinforcements during the past summer transfer window, setting their sights on Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi. New boss Arne Slot had made Zubimendi his No.1 midfield target, and while the Reds had agreed to pay his release clause, the Spaniard rejected the opportunity to move to Anfield and instead stayed put at his boyhood club.
Whether the club reignites their interest in Zubimendi remains to be seen, but Slot wants to bring in a combative No.8 next year. Having worked with Timber at his previous club Feyenoord, the Dutch tactician has made the 23-year-old a potential alternative to Zubimendi.
Dynamic, powerful and composed on the ball, Timber would be an excellent addition to Liverpool’s midfield ranks. He would be a good option to compete and rotate with the likes of Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones.
As for Spurs, the club are planning to offload Yves Bissouma next year after growing frustrated with his inconsistent displays. Bissouma is 28 and has a contract at White Hart Lane until 2026, so the next couple of transfer windows will be a good time to cash in on the Malian and reinvest the funds from his sale into a new player.
Timber would be an upgrade on Bissouma, allowing Tottenham to control games more in midfield alongside a competent No.6. With his technical skills on the ball, the five-cap Netherlands international can combine well with the likes of James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Pape Matar Sarr in the engine room.
That said, it will be intriguing to watch which of Liverpool or Spurs intensify their interest in Timber and table a bid next month.
