Newcastle United have expressed an interest in signing Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen.
The Denmark international, 28, has played only once this season due to an Achilles injury sustained back in August. He is not expected to return anytime soon and has been tipped to leave Barcelona either in January or at the end of the season.
Premier League clubs are understood to be monitoring the centre-back’s situation at Nou Camp, where he arrived on a free transfer from Chelsea in the summer of 2022. Andreas Christensen, who enjoyed two solid seasons in Spain, is now approaching the final year of his contract at Barcelona and he could be made available for around €30million.
Newcastle United have reportedly made contact with the Spanish giants over a potential move for Christensen, but could face competition from Premier League rivals Manchester United. Barcelona do not want to lose the Dane on a free transfer, so it would make sense for them to cash in on him next year amid interest from the Magpies and the Red Devils.
Newcastle eye move for Andreas Christensen
Newcastle have looked quite susceptible at the back this season. They have been missing Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman due to serious knee injuries, leaving manager Eddie Howe to carry on with the likes of Fabian Schar, Dan Burn and Lloyd Kelly.
The Toon Army must tighten up defensively, which makes the signing of a quality central defender an absolute must. Eddie Howe and Co. are pushing for European qualification after narrowly missing last time out, and bringing in quality players to St James’ Park will definitely help them improve.
Andreas Christensen would be a good option for Newcastle. He has previous experience of playing in the Premier League with Chelsea, where the defender spent six seasons and amassed 93 appearances. The Dane should be able to settle in quickly and make an instant impact at Newcastle if he joins the club.
The 28-year-old is versatile enough to operate as a central defender, full-back or defensive midfielder, and he would be an ideal acquisition for the Toon Army if they can convince him to join Howe’s forces. For €30million, Christensen would be a bargain signing for the Premier League side.
