Man Utd vs Everton preview

New Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim celebrated victory on his Old Trafford debut against Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League on Thursday.

And just three days later he’ll be looking to clinch his first Premier League win when visitors Everton come to town.

Though clearly early days, the Red Devils showed glimpses of Amorim’s fluid and attacking football with over 72% possession, 20 shots and an xG of 2.95.

But the vulnerabilities of a new and unfamiliar system were exposed by their Norwegian opponents, who netted twice in the space of four first-half minutes.

Perhaps the biggest positive was the performance of Rasmus Hojlund and his game-winning brace that could well have been a hat-trick had Alejandro Garnacho opted to pass rather than shoot.

Amorim said his side would have to “suffer” while his players adapt to his methods, but Everton could be the ideal opponents given their recent record in this fixture.

United have won their last four Premier League games against Everton, while the Toffees have won just one of their last 31 top-flight away games against Manchester United.

Sean Dyche’s side sit 15th in the standings on 11 points from 12 matches, just two points above Ipswich Town in the relegation zone.

Everton have only lost one of their last eight, but that run includes underwhelming draws against the likes of Brentford, West Ham, Fulham and Leicester.

The Merseyside outfit have failed to score in more different Premier League games than any other side this season (6), although defensively only Liverpool (6) and Manchester United (5) have kept more clean sheets.

Goals? Unlikely

It doesn’t look like Sunday’s clash is going to be a thriller, in terms of goals at least.

No side’s Premier League games have seen fewer goals scored this season than Manchester United’s 26, while only Southampton (9), Crystal Palace and Everton (10) have netted fewer goals than the Red Devils (13).

Both of Everton’s last two Premier League games have finished 0-0, and it’s unlikely that Sean Dyche will be changing his defensive approach for this encounter.

From distance

Manchester United will no doubt see more of the ball on Sunday with Everton sitting back and absorbing the pressure.

The Toffees will remain compact and that could frustrate the hosts and force United to shoot from distance.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is likely to oblige with that having struck FIVE shots from outside the box in Ruben Amorim’s first two games in charge. The Portuguese has also netted five goals in 11 games against Everton.
