Tottenham, Liverpool eye surprise deal for Fulham defender Joachim Andersen

Tottenham Hotspur are set to battle Liverpool for the signing of Fulham defender Joachim Andersen.

Joachim Andersen could join Crystal Palace

Joachim Andersen, 28, only joined Fulham from London rivals Crystal Palace in the past summer transfer window. He spent three years at Selhurst Park, establishing himself as one of the reliable centre-backs in the Premier League. The Dane has returned to Fulham, having spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Craven Cottage from Lyon.

The centre-back has forged a strong partnership with Calvin Bassey, playing an essential part in Marco Silva’s side’s promising start to the campaign, which sees them sitting in seventh after eleven matches. Andersen’s impact for Silva’s side have not gone unnoticed, with both Spurs and Liverpool reportedly monitoring his performances.

Tottenham, Liverpool keen on Fulham’s Joachim Andersen

Tottenham and Liverpool are both expected to be in the transfer market for a new central defender in the near future.

Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven—Spurs’ first-choice centre-back pairing—have been susceptible to injury problems. Beyond the duo, Ange Postecoglou has only one senior option in Radu Dragusin, who hasn’t played much since arriving at the club from Genoa back in January and is already linked back with a move to Serie A.

Thus, the Lilywhites’ interest in Andersen makes total sense. The Denmark international would be a solid potential replacement for Romero, who has been subject to links with a move to Real Madrid in recent months. Premier League proven, strong in the air and composed on the ball, Andersen could be an ideal fit in Big Ange’s system at Tottenham.

As for Liverpool, Virgil van Dijk is out of contract at the end of the season and is yet to agree on a new deal. Even if he ends up extending his stay at Anfield, he is 33 and slowly moving towards the twilight of his career.

Arne Slot must find a successor to the Dutchman sooner rather than later. At 28, Andersen isn’t a young option in any case but he could be a strong stop-gap solution for Liverpool. Being a seasoned campaigner in the Premier League, the Dane should be able to hit the ground running in the red half of Merseyside if indeed a deal goes through.

As for now there have not been any approaches from the clubs made to Fulham, or any concrete talks with Andersen, but it is expected that this could be an interesting watch in 2025.
