Manchester United are weighing up a potential free transfer move for Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies, as INEOS prioritise recruiting a left-back in 2025.
The Red Devils have had problems in the left-back position for some time now. INEOS, spearheaded by British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, have perhaps decided to invest in a new left-back to solve their glaring woes.
Luke Shaw has been repeatedly injured in the last few years, missing a lot of games as a result. The club has arguably shown too much faith in a player who just hasn’t lived up to the promise and shown the right kind of availability. When fit and available, the England international is a fantastic player but he barely stays injury free.
At this point, the club certainly need to think about replacing Shaw soon. Tyrell Malacia, Shaw’s deputy, has been out on the sidelines for more than 18 months now. The Netherlands international underwent botched knee surgeries last year, and while he has returned to team training since September, he is yet to be passed fit to participate in games.
This gives an idea about Manchester United’s concerns at left-back, something the chiefs are now planning to fix. The Red Devils have reportedly made a formal offer to Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies, who is out of contract at the end of the season and talks over a new deal have hit an impasse.
Bayern hope to bring the Canadian international back to the negotiating table before his current terms expires. He is already a target for some of Europe’s biggest clubs, and if a deal isn’t agreed soon, Davies will be eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement in January.
Alphonso Davies would be a brilliant signing for Man United
Davies is rated as one of the continent’s best attacking left-backs. The Canadian international has been a vital player for Bayern, playing a key role in the club winning many trophies in recent years. Since making his first team debut for the Bavarian giants in 2018, he has already amassed over 200 appearances and lifted 13 major honours.
Blessed with great technique, pace, power, stamina and crossing ability, Davies would be a fantastic replacement for the injury-prone Shaw. He would add the flair and dynamism from the full-back positions which the 20-time English champions currently lack. The former Vancouver Whitecaps starlet can also operate as a wing-back or left-sided midfielder, which potentially could work sizably in incoming new manager Ruben Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 system.
It is easy to see why the Bayern left-back is being courted by so many European bigwigs. Man United have shown a concrete interest by making a formal offer to Davies, so the decision now lies on him.
