Crystal Palace have endured their worst start to a Premier League season since 1992-93.
Since smashing Aston Villa 5-0 on the final day of the last Premier League campaign, the Eagles have not won a league game since. Monday’s 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground has left them in the relegation zone after eight games.
The south London club spent much of the summer fending off interest in their best players, but while skipper Marc Guehi and creative attacker Eberechi Eze stayed, they were unable to keep hold of Michael Olise and Joachim Andersen. Both Olise and Andersen were key to Crystal Palace’s strong finish last term and them leaving has undoubtedly affected the team’s balance and form.
While it is not all doom and gloom at Selhurst Park, Oliver Glasner has come under pressure early in the campaign. Glasner took reigns of the Eagles at the start of 2024 and did wonders for them, giving the team identity and reinvigorating some players most notable Jean-Philippe Mateta. But, things have not gone according to plan as they find themselves 18th on the points table.
Palace chairman Steve Parish has already started hunting alternatives in case he decides to sack Glasner. David Moyes, who parted ways with West Ham United at the end of 2023/24, is reportedly quite high on Parish’s wishlist.
David Moyes to replace under-fire Glasner at Palace?
For the second time, West Ham replaced David Moyes in the summer with a seemingly more attacking, progressive manager in Julen Lopetegui. So far, Lopetegui’s tenure has been poor at the London Stadium while Moyes is enjoying his time away from football despite interest from a number of clubs.
The experienced Scot is now rumoured to be a contender to replace Glasner at Palace. The 61-year-old preferred results over style of play which irked the majority of the West Ham faithful, especially due to the core of attacking talents at his disposal. Moyes scaled great heights with the Hammers, leading the club to a major trophy in 43 years and three seasons of strong European runs after years of relegation battles.
Given his man-management skills and expertise in helping clubs steer away from the relegation zone, Moyes can certainly help Palace get things back on track. While the ex-Everton and Manchester United tactician has admirers at Selhurst Park, Parish is willing to give Glasner time as long as the situation does not become salvageable.
